在1960年虛擬化一詞就被提出,在當時主要是讓一台主機能夠實際運行多個作業系統,隨著電腦運算能力越來越強大,能夠在單一實體主機上執行更為多元且多種應用,因此各式虛擬化的技術也快速發展,運用的範圍越來越廣泛。近年來由於雲端概念的快速興起,虛擬化技術更是成為許多雲端系統中不可或缺的基石,使得虛擬化技術,成為一個很熱門且值得探討的議題。
以往多台實體主機連線至網際網路需透過網路交換器連接,在虛擬環境中也需要一個虛擬的網路交換器用於連接虛擬主機至網際網路,這是對於虛擬化不可或缺的一項核心技術,稱為網路虛擬化。其中,虛擬交換器是在虛擬化環境中以軟體方式實現,主要提供虛擬機器橋接實體網路及虛擬機器間相互之連線。隨著虛擬化技術廣泛使用,網路交換器虛擬化對現有網路機制帶來許多衝擊與挑戰。
