英國東印度公司(English East India Company，EIC)，一個在英國商業貿易帝國形成中占極大重要性的特許公司。17、18世紀的英國東印度公司在印度展開商業擴張，除了利用歐洲外交時局，逐步解除葡萄牙、荷蘭、法國等西方貿易強權的競爭外；又以軟式外交貿易政策拉攏印度「蒙兀兒帝國」的地方邦國，最終建成公司在遠東地區的貿易霸權。其後，更得到母國議會的信任，代為治理印度與遠東業務，進一步從過去商人的身份轉變成統治者，擴張英國的遠東版圖。
十九世紀英國中產階級挾持產業革命帶來的經濟動力，全面推動政治與社會改革，於1832年，迫使英議會通過「改革法案」。自此英國步向自由經濟之途。，英國東印度公司開始面臨各種貿易特許遭到廢除，由盛轉衰的命運。本文試著透過研究19世紀的英國東印度公司，這個最有成就的特許公司的衰落，探討19世紀英國議會改革、英國資產階級社會特性，英國知識階級的政治傳統。
大英帝國能有「日不落帝國」之稱，其關鍵便是因為其擁有世界各地的殖民地，而最被英國所重視，且回饋英國最多的，就是英國東印度公司所統治的印度。本文也試著透過研究東印度公司，去認識大英帝國海外殖民的策略，甚至進一步了解大英帝國之所以為帝國，其海洋商業帝國之形成以及殖民政策與經營。

The British East India Company was an extremely chartered company in the British Commercial Empire. During the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century, the British East India Company employed a flexible diplomatic policy to “develop their own strength while appeasing surrounding neighbors” thus ensuring their tie with the Mughal Empire while avoiding conflicts with European powers such as Spain, Portugal, and France. The British East India Company even transformed itself from a trading company to actual ruler of the region thus securing British influence in the Far East.
However, the British East India Company saw its decline during the Nineteenth Century. The rise of Liberalism and expanding middle class all contributed to the abolishment of the charters granted to the British East India Company. This essay would be an attempt to examine the rise and fall of this most successful British charter company in order to understanding the British empire in 19th century, namely, the reform of British Parliament, certain social reforms, the political traditions of the British intellectuals, and the change of British imperial ruling in India .
The main reason that the British Empire is able to claim that “the sun never sets on British soil” is the vast colonies in her possession. The most valued prize that contributed the most to the British prosperity was India under the rule of the British East India Company. This essay intends to sketch out to sketch out the British Colonial strategies, the emergence of British overseas trading empire, and the British Colonial policies and its administrations through studying the British East India Company.
