經被證實為二十世紀英國偉大女作家及女性主義先驅的維吉尼亞‧吳爾芙在其〈現代小說〉篇章中，堅持小說必須貼近現實生活，重視人物內心的事實以展露人生真實情貌。是故，她著重於刻劃人物的心靈與意識活動，並因此而被歸類為意識流小說家。吳爾芙的女性觀非常清楚，從《出航》到《幕與幕間》，其小說中皆存在著一種女性的自覺。她在創作時，有意地從女性視角切入筆下（女性）人物的內心和深層意識之中，充分表現了她對女性自我的多重性的認識與肯定。這種勇於書寫女性自我的風格，顯示吳爾芙在重寫女性自我的基礎上，已經克服了父權意圖將女性作家閹割去勢的內化心理，從而成功呈現「陰性書寫」的開放、多元性質。此外，在寫作實踐上，她主張小說家，尤其是女性作家，應不斷嘗試合適的表現形式、技巧與創作題材，因而提倡雌雄同體的文體。在這方面，吳爾芙本人可說是其文學理論之實踐者。
本論文共分為六章，全文在理論上，試圖將吳爾芙的女性文本置於適當的女性主義文學批評和榮格分析心理學視角之中，希冀能夠擺脫男性批評理論和男性為本位的閱讀死角，俾使被邊緣化的女性作家，及其文本中長久被忽視的女性經驗與現實，可望被揭示出來；以及超越肖瓦爾特所設定之「女性中心批評」範疇，從研究女作家作品中的女性形象之方向釋放出來，兼論吳爾芙觀照下的男性形象，以審視吳爾芙小說世界中所凸顯的女性主體意識和對婦女解放的獨立思考，再通過兩性關係的相互制衡，深入揭示男女那不為人知的內心世界奧秘。
第一章簡略概述女作家的寫作困限並交代筆者的研究動機。不同流派的女性主義文學批評家對吳爾芙女性文本的讀解和闡釋有著迥然不同的評價。第二章主要把焦點放在對美國女性主義批評家伊萊恩‧肖瓦爾特從揚女抑男的角度所稱頌之「女性批評」和「女性中心批評」理論上，並試圖在「女性中心批評」和「女性系譜」兩者理論之間，尋求更能貼近吳爾芙文本以理解和詮釋她的語言及筆下人物內心世界的研究進路。至目前為止，以女性主義理論專門研究某個（女性）作家或某部文學作品的論著仍舊有待填補。準此，本文希冀借助榮格分析心理學以從另一角度審視吳爾芙的《燈塔行》。榮格從心理學的角度認為，男女兩性本身皆有陰陽兩種特質，唯有結合體內的異性特質，個人方得以臻至雌雄同體的完滿狀態。論文第三章則試圖探討女性書寫的豐富文本，審視女性在陽性書寫之外的多重書寫策略。將「雌雄同體」用於文學領域，是指一種理想的作家創作狀態，這一點在吳爾芙的《自己的房間》中有精闢的論述。本論文即嘗試依據法國女性主義者所提倡之雌雄同體的書寫效應來探討吳爾芙筆下的人物形象，窺探其小說所體現的兩性世界究竟是父權制意識形態之文學社會或男女和平共處的桃花源。在法國女性主義理論中，特別是西蘇、依利格瑞和克里斯蒂娃等人充分利用多元特質的女性性慾特質思想，去取代父系陽物中心論下單一歡愉或男性的性慾特質。她們致力於開創獨特的「陰性書寫」，欲將女性的身體、女性的陰性歡愉和女性的差異滲入語言和文本。女人的創作由肉體開始，性差異即靈感的源泉，並強調肉體作為意象基礎的重要性，以衝破傳統文化的束縛和打破語言定勢的一統天下。論文第四章乃依循吳爾芙女性小說文本中有關女性關懷以及女性省思，做為其創作特色的分類標準，並從〔女性〕意識流、多元敘述觀點、細節描述、走出舊式附庸地位的新女性及姐妹情誼等多個方面展開對吳爾芙的小說書寫創作特色之論述。第五章進入《燈塔行》的文本論析，主要借用榮格心理學之概念，再從女性主義觀點對書中三個主要人物，即拉姆齊夫婦和莉麗‧布里斯庫做一深入剖析。就本論文所選取的〈燈塔行〉文本而言，顯示了男女兩性在價值觀上面，還存有著人的價值觀，亦即每個個人都需要在自尊自強自愛自省的基礎上，進行對完整人格的追求，全面實現作為人的生命價值。第六章，也是最後一章，提呈了筆者的研究限制，並總括全文。

That Virginia Woolf becomes one of the greatest woman writers in the modern British novel as well as the forerunner of the feminist is a critical commonplace. According to her essay, “Modern Fiction” in particular, the novel writing serve to express the “reality” or “truth” of human existence, which means “true to life”. Her novels, which usually ignoring plot and discarding conventional characterization, had characterized her as a modernist writer. As a female writer, writing, for Virginia Woolf, was a revolutionary act to subvert and deconstruct the patriarchal order. Hence, she able to express her female writing genius into her text. In addition, from the aspect of psychology, as her writing penetrate into the female’s unconsciousness, she manages to transfer her feminine libido into her text, indicate the female depression with collective unconscious, in consequence successfully display the freely and multiplicity of feminine writing. Moreover, on her writing practice, she claimes that novelist, especially the female novelist, should keep on trying the appropriate manifestation, strategy and subject, thus create the appropriate kind of novel for the expression of her androgynous vision. On this, she herself became the practician of her theory.
In this thesis, I suggest Jungian theory and Feminist Literary Criticism as the best approaches to the study and research for To the Lighthouse. Chapter One of this thesis takes a look at the difficulty of female writers in their writing practice and briefly describes my research motive. Chapter Two is the elucidation of Elaine Showalter’s Gynocritics and Carl G. Jung’s conception of androgyny. Chapter Three focuses upon Woolf’s androgyny and the French feminism’s feminine writing. Chapter Four delineates the distinctive feature of Woolf’s feminine writing. Chapter Five affirms the feasibility of feminism literary critique and Jungian theory as a method to appreciate Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. Chapter Six, the conclusion, I concentrate on the restriction of my research and analyze the reciprocal relations between the novel and major elements of feminism literary critique and Jungian psychoanalysis.
