This research is proceeded with three steps of investigation for chromaesthesia, and its main purpose is to study the relation of chromaesthesia for taste and smelling, so as to find out the basic tastes (sour, sweet, bitter, brackish, hot, and astringent) and the color mating principle for smelling (flowers fragrance, fruit pulp, decay, resin, stench, and medicine)in better combination of color mate, which can be used as reference for practice and teaching on visual communication design. 1. Items for test : Tastes - sour, sweet, bitter, brackish, hot, and astringent , 6 items. Smell - 6 basic flavors of flower fragrance, fruit pulp, decay, resin, stench, and medicine. 2. Steps and methods of test (1) 1st step (single color chips synesthesia test) 1-1 Color Chips Selected 1-2 Under day light source, the testees should select out 5 colors to meet most ideally for the test step. 1-3 For each item, according to choice rate to pick former 18 colors as the color mate base for 2nd step. (2) 2nd step (2-color and 3-color mate synesthesia order) 2-1 Rank Order 2-2 Take the result from the 1st step to arrange and combine with 2 colors and 3 colors for total 15 pairs of color combination, and the testees proceed to arrange by order to get the various color mates of outstanding feelings. (3) 3rd step (color-mate combination image measuring) 3-1 Semantic Differential 3-2 According to the order selected from each item in the 2nd step, the former 2 places of 2 colors mate are picked out, and former 1 place of 3 colors mate is picked out to proceed. 3. Result of Study (1) 1st step (single color synesthesia test) In each feeling, the hot and stench will be easily to present on color, and the brackish is the most difficult one for this presentation. In conclusion, the presentation of the taste is more easier than the smell''''s. (2) 2nd step (2-color and 3-color mate synesthesia order) In each feeling, the uniformity of the color-mate combination is evidently to reach a standard. The variance of analysis on each group is a clear difference. (3) 3rd step (color-mate combination image test) No difference between male and female, image test on sour and sweet of color-mate combination is in the better color mate combination. The poor presentation for color mate combination is for brackish, hot, and fruit pulp.
