義和團運動（1898 ～ 1901）可以視為在十九世紀遠東地區發生的最大的反基督教運動之一。筆者之所以要研究義和團運動是因為華人學者對義和團運動有一套看法，而西方學者依靠西方傳教士，記者及見證人提出的資訊則又有另外一套看法，彼此用誤解及從過去到今日流行的刻板印象且沒有對話，沒有互相了解。筆者想發現實況，並試圖澄清義和團運動的本質。中國於清朝開始積極與西方國家建立交流並發展外交關係，同時也產生了文化的衝突、誤解及至今日存在的缺乏理解。筆者試著通過不同的看法比較及分析，更加仔細地探析本運動之實況。本論文的目標就是筆者要研究的議題包括：義和團運動發生之背景、義和團運動的成因、義和團與基督教衝突探析。作者試從政治、宗教、經濟與自然災害四個方面探討義和團運動之現象。在研究過程中發現，此運動爆發之主要因素是經濟不景氣、自然災害、貧困、盜匪以及向基督徒造成的誹謗、平民對外國人（包括傳教士）行動與他們對中國影響力之不滿意、基督徒的行為以及基督教之誤解。筆者認為傳教士及基督徒成了中國及列強政策的侵略的犧牲者，因為平民不分教士、非教士和哪國人。他們將每個外國人敵視為侵略分子，在這些因素的推波助瀾之下，形成歷史的悲劇。

Boxer rebellion can be viewed as one of the biggest anti-christian riots in the Far East region in the nineteenth century. The reason why author wants to do research on Boxer rebellion is because Chinese scholars have one opinion on this rebellion, and western scholars on the basis of materials provided by western missionaries, journalists and witnesses have another opinion, both sides keep on using misinterpretations and stereotypes, and there is no dialog, no understanding of each other. Author wants to find out what was the real situation and tries to clarify nature of Boxer movement. From Qing dynasty on China got actively involved in the dialog with the West and developed diplomatic relations. At the same time took place some cultural conflicts, misunderstanding and up to nowadays existing lack of understanding. Through comparison of opinions and analysis author more carefully explores real situation of this rebellion. Goals of this thesis, which are main topics of research include: Background of the Boxer rebellion; Causes of formation of Boxer rebellion; Research and analysis of conflict between Boxers and Christians.
Author is to explore Boxer rebellion from political, religious, economic aspects and is to define influence of natural disasters. In the process of research author found out that main factors which influenced this uprising are economic depression, natural disasters, poverty, banditry as well as calumny against Christians, discontent with actions of foreigners and their influence on China, misunderstanding of Christian actions and Christian faith. Author thinks that missionaries and Christians became victims of aggressive policy pursued by China and Western Great Powers, because ordinary people do not differ missionary, not missionary or where does one come from. They viewed every foreigner as invader which as stimulating factor created historical tragedy.
