In the beginning of the 20th century, China experienced drastic changes in politics, philosophy, culture, and certainly music as well. Composer Chen Peixum was born in 1921 in Hong Kong. During which time Hong Kong was a British colony, as a result, Chen’s was influenced by both western education and Chinese culture. Chen Peixum(1921-2006)wrote Five Piano Pieces of Cantonese Tune during 1952 to 1975. In this work, Chen use tunes and integrated with Chinese music element involved Cantonese folk Tunes song and the pentatonic scale, and Western musical techniques such as harmony, counterpoint, motivic development and so on to compose this piano composition. This research will be discussed in three parts: the first part introduced Chen’s biography and discuss the historical development of piano music in modern China. The second part analyze structure of Five Piano Pieces of Cantonese Tune including harmony, motivic development and musical instrument imitation. The third part in accordance to theoretical analyze interpretations discussed previously, and score notation, which in speed, dynamics, pedal, make a suggestion.
