A STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MASS RAPID TRANSPORTATION AND PUBLIC ART ABSTRACT A metropolis is the symbol of technology and prosperity. However, it is also troubled with high density of population and traffic. The development of Mass Rapid Transportation (MRT)has responded to the above problem. But at the same time MRT has created a lot of visual conflicts. Therefore, it’s important to obtain balance and harmony between Mass transportation and cityscape. “MRT” refers to a kind of activity which human being or goods are transported from one place to another. The conveyances of MRT are varied from place to place, including bus, taxi, electrical car, cable car, subway, bullet train, ferry streamer etc. The stations of all these MRT conveyances are the bases for public service. The elevation and landscape of the station architecture represent the city cultural characteristics and connotation. “Public Art” is a theme art issue in these recent years, and is a developing concept. Different explanations and definitions of “Public Art” lead to different perspectives in “Public Art”. Legislative Yuan has passed an ordinance of Culture and Art Supplement in July, 1992. The ninth rule of the Ordinance regulates the relationship between art works and public buildings. In the eighty’s, the art works of public space on Taiwan are mostly sculptures of politicians. Later, along the street, “Lion Clock” from Lion Club; “Rotary Tower” from Rotary Club are symbols of commercial groups and business enterprise for the purpose of promoting public image. These art works are located at “Public Space”. However’ they are the space extension of private enterprise. This article tries to illustrate the relationship between public art and Mass Rapid Transportation, as well as to understand the influence of public art on MRT environment and passengers. Through interviews with specialists and key persons, this study tries to make suggestions and propose recommendations in order to beautify the relationship between MRT and public art.
