Wang Chen-ho is an iconic writer in Taiwan. His works feature the use of diverse local languages, which adds local atmosphere to the stories. On the basis of Sumner Ives’ theory of literary dialect, this study regards the mix of Taiwanese Hokkien in Wang Chen-Ho’s novels as a form of “literary dialect,” a kind of language authors use in writing to represent local speech in order to achieve literary effects. Based on this premise, this thesis aims to study the translation of literary dialect in Wang Chen-Ho’s two short stories, Jiazhuang yi niuche and Sulan yao chujia, from the perspective of functionality. This study has two main focuses: firstly, techniques used by Wang to represent literary dialect and the functions of literary dialect in the source texts; secondly, strategies translators adopted to translate literary dialect, and whether and how the strategies used preserve the functions of literary dialect in the translation. In addition, this study also explores whether and how the otherness of multilingual texts is conveyed through translation.
The analysis of the source texts finds that Wang Chen-Ho used the techniques of phonological, morphosyntactic, and lexical representation to demonstrate the features of Taiwanese Hokkien. Furthermore, the usage of literary dialect in the source texts serves five functions, including (1) adding authenticity to the speech of characters, (2) stressing contrasts, (3) showcasing the usage of proverbs or slang, (4) indicating local cultural features, and (5) demonstrating the author’s unique writing style.
The analysis of the target texts discovers that translators generally employed standardization to translate literary dialect. As a result, the dialectal elements of the source texts were smoothed out in the translation. However, for the translation of certain literary dialect, the translators still adopted corresponding strategies in an attempt to preserve the functions of literary dialects.
Finally, the study also finds that the otherness of the source texts is conveyed not only through foreignization strategies within the texts but also through para-texts, which compensate for the otherness that is not conveyed through the translation.
