The characteristics of the adsorption reaction of chlorophenols on hydrous montmorillonite and AlO were investigated. The effects of surfactants and humic acid on the adsorption of chlorophenols, under acidic and alkaline pH ranges at montmori- llonite/electrolyte interfaces were examined. Three types of surfactant :Triton X-100, Brij-35 and SDS were used. Chloro- phenols, such as, 2,4-dichlorophenol、2,6-dichlorophenol、2,4,6- trichlorophenol were studied. Through electrokinetic and batch adsorption studies, we investigated the adsorption mechanism of chlorophenols. It was found that the adsorption of chloro- phenols increased when octanol/water coefficient of chloro- phenol(Kow) increased. The adsorption on solid/water interface increased with increasing number of substituent groups. It was therefore proposed that the major driving force of these reac- tions was hydorphobic interaction. For 2,6-chlorophenol, the adsorption increased in the presence of humic acid. The adsorp- tion also increased in the presence of surfactant. Additionally ,we calculatedthe free energy change(△G) of these adsorption reaction. Thenegative free energy change indicated were spontaneous.
