“Vicious Circle” talks about “the banality of evil” that people tend to follow the mainstream and not willing to do independent thinking. In the society, the workplace and the school, the mainstream opinion could be a bullying to those who do critical thinking. Moreover, they are usually a scapegoat for the fault they didn’t make.
By the film “Vicious Circle”, the director wants to show you the spirit of “the Banality of Evil” by Hannah Arendt, that as an ordinary people like you can do extremist acts when you can’t realize that there’s something wrong with what you take for granted.
“Vicious Circle” is a sci-fi thriller, the three characters “Ann, Fang Yu and Sheng Yin” represent three different social paths of a person’s life. The story is set in internet celebrity (KOL) culture and self-media industry. By the three characters’ behaviors, we can see how people change their minds from independent thinkers to mainstream followers. The manager in the film represents the authority within the system, and everyone in the system has to obey the order. On the other hand, the doctor represents the authority from the outside that motivates people to obey the rule, and it shows that people tend to obedience to the position authority.
The story shows that it's easy to become "evil" that you only have to obey the rule. And a person's motivation can result in good or bad consequence to him/her, and that makes the line between good and evil become blur. If nobody realize the importance about it, such things as it will happen again and again.
