大提琴在音樂的歷史中，因為樂器結構和時代需求的轉變，扮演過各式各樣的角色，例如從十六、十七世紀扮演數字低音和伴奏的角色，到十八、十九世紀登上獨奏的舞台，甚至到現代的大提琴，已經突破種種技巧的限制，相當程度地影響當代和往後作曲家的創作，更多華麗而且豐富的音樂和音色也就呼之欲出了。首先，我將針對二十世紀之後的大提琴，在樂器結構、演奏方式、演奏技巧、曲式發展、和社會功能等方面加以討論，希望透過對大提琴在各方面演進的認識，更加了解現代音樂的作曲家是如何看待樂器和音樂之間的結合。

　　亨德密特〈Paul Hindemith，1895-1963〉為許多不同樂器創作過奏鳴曲，都有令人讚嘆的表現，其中替大提琴譜寫的這首作品25之3，更是在大提琴的現代音樂中佔有極為重要的地位，他將音樂和技巧的結合發揮的淋漓盡致，幾乎在許多著名演奏家的現代作品錄音中，都不會省略這首作品。我將研究大提琴奏鳴曲的發展對亨德密特創作此曲的影響，同時分析亨德密特在此首大提琴無伴奏奏鳴曲中，對於每個截然不同風格的樂章，如何運用節奏、和聲、單音、音程和和絃的變化傳達他心中完美的大提琴音樂。
