這份學術研究將探討五本“老人與海”中譯本的相似點與不同點。研究者將探討翻譯家性別所造成的不同。此外，翻譯的年代也構成翻譯的不同處。數十年來，翻譯家的翻譯策略跟使用的字詞相同或有所差異? 因此，這份研究將經由性別、年代、不同區域、語詞分類來分析、對比五本中文翻譯本。
這五本中文翻譯的翻譯家分別是張愛玲、宋碧雲、楊照、余光中、吳勞。張愛玲於1952年翻譯，為第一本譯本。宋碧雲是台灣專職翻譯家，翻譯過許多膾炙人口的著作。楊照版是最新翻譯本，於2013年出版。余光中於1953即翻譯過，但再次修改過後於2010年再次出版。吳勞則是中國第一位翻譯老人與海的翻譯家。
藉由這五本出色的翻譯本，來分析比對，相信能為老人與海的翻譯文本做統整分析。

The study will investigate the similarities and differences among five significant Mandarin renditions of “the old man and the sea”. It will study the differences via the genders of translators. Besides, the different eras would cause the differences of translation. In decades, will the translating strategies or the use of vocabulary besimilar or different? The study will compare the translation styles through gender of translators, different eras of translators, different area and linguistic category.
The research look into the different translation strategies used in different versions. The TT1 is a version translated by Eileen Chang (張愛玲) in 1952 the same year as “the Old man and the Sea” published. The TT2 is a Taiwan version translated by Bi-Yun Song (宋碧雲). The TT3 is a latest Taiwan version translated by Jhào Yang (楊照). Yang is a modern writer. He claimed that the book needs retranslating for a newer and better rendition. The TT4 and TT5 are simple Chinese version. It means that Chinese words are simplified into simple and easy for use. The TT4 is translated by Guang Jhong Yu (余光中). Yu translated the book in 1953, then revised and republished it in 2010. The TT5 is translated by Láo Wu (吳勞). He was known for the first translator of “the Old Man and the Sea” in China.
