“to omou” is acquired in the early stages for the JSL learners ,and it is also an end modal maker of sentence most frequently used. However, the research that has paid attention to learner's acquisition process up to now is not found. Thus, this parper will take modal maker “to omou” of “the first person , Non- Past form, Non-Negative form”as the object to do the following research: I. Taking the viewpoint of “territory of information”, re-examining the usage standard of “to omou” and referring to the earlier research related to “to omou” in Japanese linguistics, then setting up the category of language expression for “to omou” again. II. According to the category of semantic usage in “to omou”, taking an examination on the acquisition process of JSL learners. III.Discussing the tendency on using error and difficulty on acquisition of Chinese native speaker. As a result, the following conclusions have been reached: i) First of all, the standard of whether to use “to omou” or not in the sentence, it will be first considered two alternatives - whether it would interfere the right of others’ judgement and the exact understanding of the truth or false on the matter rather than the concept of territory of information. When the statement is tended to be the one from listener, then “to omou kedo / ga” will then be considered more appropriate. ii) Next, referring to the previous research in linguistics, the usage of “to omou” has been set up into 9 categories, which were listed based on the difficulty from learners and the result is as follows: “Uncertain recognition (assumption) usage”, “Subjective recognition (opinion evaluation) usage”, “Hope and decision expression usage”, “Uncertain recognition (judgement evasion)) usage”, “Subjective recognition (probability judgement)”, “Subjective recognition (Conditional judgement)”, “Uncertain recognition (recollection)”, “Performative report usage” and “depending on the listener”. iii)Lastly, this paper is focusing on the analysis on the error usage of “to omou” and it has also found out that it is common phenomenon in each level of JSL learner to have the experience of the error usage in the tense and aspect, therefore, it has been inferred that the complexity of the verb “ omou” is the leading factor to make learner having a difficulty in language acquisition.
