隨著資訊科技的進步，許多傳統的工作流程事務可以用資訊技術來加以模型化，並開發為自動化工作流程系統。在企業極度競爭的環境下，彼此之間比較的是工作執行效率及能否快速反應市場和客戶的需求。因此，為了企業的永續經營及提昇競爭力，工作流程技術的應用乃是一條必經之路，其可幫助移植企業的傳統工作流程到一個自動化工作流程系統的平台上，使得企業流程的運作更有效率且能節省大量成本。
本論文主要是探討工作流程的相關技術，且應用此技術來將傳統的事務流程作業加以自動化，並以一虛擬的EDB雜誌社為對象來探討工作流程的概念點。從分析、設計到實作出可上線使用的雜誌社自動化工作流程應用系統，以驗証流程自動化之可行性。除了雜誌社的流程自動化外，舉凡其它企業的採購單流程、請假流程或員工績效考核流程等等，皆可以本論文之研究實例為參考而加以實現之。
系統分析階段時，運用UML(Unified Modeling Language)塑模語言來探討各種行為者(Actor)對系統的需求為何，到了設計實作階段，則採用Lotus公司所推出之Domino Workflow工作流程技術來實現EDB雜誌社之自動化「邀稿流程」與「特刊流程」。雜誌社的流程皆架構於Web平台上，使得工作流程參與者只要使用瀏覽器連接上網際網路即可開始進行工作的處理。

With the progress of Information Technology, many traditional workflow affairs can be modularized, and be developed into an automatic workflow system. In the extremely competitive setting, it is the efficiency of job execution and the prompt response to the demands of market and customer that distinguishes among businesses. As a result, the applying of automatic workflow techniques is an essential element of perpetual operation and competence assurance, which can help migrating the traditional workflow of a business to an automatic workflow system platform, making the business management procedure more effective and saving considerable quantities on cost.
This essay is to confer related techniques to workflow, and to apply these techniques to the automation of workflow operation. In order to verify the practicality of automatic workflow, this essay, based on a virtual periodical publisher, confers concepts of workflow from analyzing, designing to implementing the automatic workflow applying system of the publisher that can be utilized online. In addition, other business workflows, such as purchasing list procedure, ask for leave procedure, or achievement assessment procedure, all can be realized by referring to the study case in this essay.
During the system-analyzing phrase, UML (Unified Modeling Language) modeling language is applied to probe into system demands of actors of various kinds. In the designing and implementing phrase, Domino Workflow by Lotus is adopted to realizing the automation of “call for paper process” and “having a special issue process” for EDB publisher. All processes of the publisher are constructed on Web platform so that workflow participants can proceed to work by using browsers connecting to internet.
