19世紀中後期之法國，歷經了一連串政治鬥爭與革命，社會經濟在革命下逐漸好轉，原先沒落的音樂文化開始盛行中產階級喜愛之大歌劇（Grand Opéra）與炫技曲目。在這百家爭鳴時代裡，法朗克（César Franck, 1822- 1890）選擇與他人走不一樣的路。原先夢想成為鋼琴家的他，受現實擊敗後，不餒不棄地投身奉獻於教會，並在堅毅不撓的精神下，謙卑地鑽研巴赫、貝多芬之作品。直到1875年聽到華格納（Richard Wagner, 1813- 1883）《崔斯坦與伊索德》（Tristan und Isolde, 1859）之半音和聲風格（Chromaticism）受啟發後，於晚年開啟人生創作巔峰期，在眾多學生擁護下，為世人所了解，成為法國國民音樂協會（Société Nationale de Musique）總監，可謂大器晚成、實力兼備之音樂家、管風琴家、教育家。
本論文將探究法朗克晚期著名鋼琴作品－《前奏、聖詠與賦格》。整曲以承先啟後之手法，採古老曲種、半音和聲風格（Chromaticism）、連篇曲式（Cyclic Form）等特色創作，成為法國19世紀後期獨特且代表之鋼琴作品，並為後世法國音樂鋪路。本論文將分為五章作探討，分別為緒論、法朗克生平背景、《前奏、聖詠與賦格》之樂曲分析、《前奏、聖詠與賦格》之演奏詮釋以及結論。期望個人從文獻探討中，在演奏上正確掌握風格，並藉此學習到法朗克遇挫而不敗、堅毅並謙虛之精神。

After a series of political struggles and revolutions in the end of 19th century, France’s financial status had recovered, which also led to the rebound of the originally declined music popularity among the middle class. The popular music genre then included Grand Opéra and the virtuoso works. In this competitive era, César Franck (1822-1890) chose the path that was seldom taken. In his life time, he had experienced a lot of obstacles; however, he didn’t give up but devoted himself to the service in church. He stayed humble and persevered in studying the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven. It was not until 1875 that he was inspired by Wilhelm Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde(1859), the style of Chromaticism. Since then, he had achieved the peak of his composing career in the very old age. With the help from his students, his works became well-known around the world. Besides, he became the minster of French Music Association (Société Nationale de Musique). Arguably, he was a late- bloomer, professional musician, organist and educator.
This research aims to analyze the late work of César Franck: Prelude, Chorale et Fugue. Taking up the traditions and opening up new possibilities, this work adopted not only the traditional genres, but also Chromaticism, Cyclic Form and so on. It was very unique in France during the 19th century and paved the new way for French music. This thesis is divided into five parts: the introduction, the background of César Franck, the analysis of Prelude, Chorale et Fugue, the interpretation of Prelude, Chorale et Fugue and the conclusion. By doing the literature review, I hope I can perform the work more precisely and also learn the value of perseverance and humbleness from César Franck.
