ABSTRACT The subject of this thesis is DA、SHIAU YA(大、小雅). In chapter two, the name of YA is first formalized and it researches how the YA is named and the reasons behind dividing YA into DA YA and SHIAU YA. Chapter 3 is to organize the content of these two YA and to discuss the value of them. DA、SHIAU YA have abundant resources. Different categorization methods are involved here, with referencing the content of the poetry. Two YA(二雅)are separated into nine categories. It is concluded that the two YA have great values in areas such as literature, historical studies, social science and high realism. Chapter 4 discusses the era and authors of YA. Former scholars research studies show that DA YA are mostly from the middle to the end of West-Chou dynasty. While almost all articles of SHIAU YA are from the end of West-Chou, except 3 poems which are at about the beginning of Chou dynasty. As far as the authors of YA, only those mentioned in the poetry such as JIA-FU (家父), temple people MENG-TZ (孟子), and CHIU-FU (吉甫) are more accurate, the rest are recorded differently in ancient documents. For this reason, the main focus of this chapter is not to verify who the authors are, rather than to narrate the authors of YUAN-TSZ-SHR(怨刺詩), to salute their spirit of “Willing to sacrifice their lives in order to defend their tongues”. Chapter 5 is to compare the difference between DA、SHIAU YA from the following 5 levels: article size, content, writing skills, narration and thinking. Topics in this chapter are little discussed by former scholars. Most of the discussions are my own personal opinions. Any comments and suggestions are welcomed. Chapter 6 is to discuss the social reality reflected by the YA. This chapter tries to find evidence from the poetry, to see how people in Chou dynasty treat at the relationship of male and female. To find out their hobbies and customs, and to understand how they work for their daily living. What are some of the characteristics of their religions, how they embrace the political dark side of West-Chou dynasty at its later days.
