This research aims to analyze the three zheng pieces Muqam Overture and Dance, In Spirit of Western, and Western Theme Fantasia, based on the musical style from the Western Regions, to figure out the Western Regions musical style as well as the basic format of its musical elements, and to identify the corresponding elements applied by the three pieces from the Xinjiang Uighur music through comparison.
The research starts from analyzing features of Muqum music, probing into the musical elements of the three pieces, and explores the connection between the composers’ musical concept and Muqum music in the aspects of tuning, musical structure and elemental applications to further comprehend the musical styles of these pieces. Besides, it also studies and interprets the three pieces from the angle of a performer, and examining how the three pieces efficiently exploit the expressiveness of zheng performance and expand the performing field of zheng with different possibilities.
The research result reflects that the three pieces all fuse with the rhythmic features, musical developing methods, meter variations, scales, neutral tone as well as musical structures, and through the former analyses, it also clarifies how the composers present strong Western Regions aroma by the applications of the vivacious rhythm and linear melodies of Muaum music.
