Abstract In Minguo thirty-eight year (1949), among all the calligraphers who came from China, Si Nan-Hsun was famous for his Seal character calligraphy and shared the same fame with Ding Nian-Xian who was famous for his ‘clerical script’(li-shu) in Taiwan. The second chapter introduces Si Nan-Hsun’ s background information, his relations with others and his life after moving to Taiwan. He lived by being a doctor; however, with his passion for calligraphy, he kept on studying it. His field of calligraphy in Taiwan crossed the two periods: The Recovery Stage and The Re-Raising Stage, which were classified by Chen Qi-Quan. Si Nan-Hsun’ s most prosperous stage was also during these two stages, which can also show his great influences in the calligraphy field in Taiwan.
The third chapter investigates and organizes the process of how Si Nan-Hsun learned calligraphy from his childhood, the concept about his learning, studying and thoughts from the two articles he wrote: The earnest (nu-ma-shi-jia) and My Story from the South to the North (wo-de-zi-nan-er-bei). From the activities he attended, it can also prove that the efforts he put into the North-Stone-Inscription for his calligraphy. His well-structured seal character calligraphy is mainly from the practices and studies about Chin and Han dynasties bronze and stone inscriptions. In addition, it includes the Tang seal calligraphy as well.
In the forth chapter, it introduces the portfolios about Si Nan-Hsun: Si Nan-Hsun’ s Anniversary Portfolio (Si Nan-Hsun ji-nian-zhuan-ji) and Si Nan-Hsun’ s Seal Scrip Calligraphy Portfolio (Si Nan-Hsun zhuan-shu-ce), to investigate his seal character calligraphy. Si Nan-Hsun studied the bronze and stone inscriptions, as well as the calligraphy works from Deng Shi-Ru and Wu Rang-Zhi. His works show the elegance and the well-applies from different studies and styles. This chapter also analyses his calligraphy style, as well as a calligraphy work which has a totally different style from other Si Nan-Hsun’ s works but was put under his name, and also his other outstanding calligraphy works with different characters.
Finally, this study compares Si Nan-Hsun’ s seal character calligraphy with other seal character works from other calligraphers’ from China during the same period. It also includes other research about Si Nan-Hsun and his influences on the field of calligraphy in Taiwan, to emphasize the importance of his existence in this area.
