As a medium, there are two types of exhibitions about cancer: personal life stories of patients telling how hard they have managed to survive, or educational materials on the preventions of cancer warning lives are not predictable. However, there are two kinds of prejudices among the audience. For one, sympathy; the other, empathy instead of critical thinking. "Medical Monopoly" is a creation based on my academical background. With knowledge of medical sociology, applied media art, and the experiences of being a family of a patient, I represent my care about unjust medical resources and life-philosophy through mixed media exhibition.
"Do you have what it takes to be sick?" is a common question for people today. I hope this exhibition could draw the public's attention to such issues and have their feedback in different ways. There are total 5 sections in the exhibition "Medical Monopoly", besides the introduction text, I set other interactive installations as well, such as capsule toys, board games, and VR facility, giving audiences immersive experiences. The board game section is the highlight of this exhibition, expressing how exhausted care-taking could be through a 30 minutes long gaming process. In the last section, the idea is to invite several families to share their stories on care-taking, making the section a co-working creation and leaving the exhibition a great ending. The exhibition successfully initiated discussion among audiences, and connected experiences between them and reviews to the board game are mostly positive, showing the original settings and goals were stick to the plan.
There thesis will go through the production purpose, references, production plan and report, audiences’ reviews and my feedback.
