Jieyun Temple in Banqiao is a Taiwan traditional temple of folk religion, which established in the Ching Dynasty, Xian Feng 6th year. It is originated to inherit incense from Tsz Wan Crag, Zhong He, therefore, named after “Jieyun Temple”. (“Jie” here in Chinese is a verb which means to continue and succeed to) Jieyun Temple is established by a group of Zhangzhou immigrants dwelling in Banqiao in the Ching Dynasty, which led by Lin Guo Fang, the patriarch of the Lin Ben Yuan family. The extant Jieyun Temple is rebuild in the third year of R.O.C, containing many important Taiwan cultural heritage, which including edifice, statues, sculpture, color-painting, other cultural relics, festivals, and the folk religion gathered and represented here. All of these cultural heritages make Jieyun Temple the historically and artistically richest temple of folk religion in Banqiao. This essay mainly focuses on Jieyun Temple. At first, I ascertain the religious status of Jieyun Temple by investigating the mutual relationship between Jieyun Temple and the development of Banqiao. Secondly, I trace through the trajectory of the rise of Lin Ban Yuan family and the fight with weapons between Zhangzhou immigrants and Quanzhou, and reconstruct the background of Jieyun Temple of establishing period. At the same time, I inquiry that why people construct Jieyun Temple in that period and its inheritance relationship with Tsz Wan Crag by multiple data. Then I investigate the origin and meaning of the name of Jieyun Temple by its edifice, cultural heritage, and folk religion represented here. Besides, I investigated the inherited history of abbot and the present situation of abbot appointment system. Afterward, I investigate the religion type of Jieyun Temple by its revealed in the Kuan-yin belief, festivals and worship in each shrine. In the final part, I discuss the artistic and historic value of Jieyun Temple by its historical cultural relics and architectural decoration. Jieyun Temple is the head of four most important ancient temples in Banqiao, and also one of five most important temples in Bai Jie Bao. Jieyun Temple is the center of Kuan-yin worship in Bai Jie Bao since the Ching Dynasty, Xian Feng period. Therefore, its history and religion is significant to times. In short, I want to record faithful and investigate the history, religion, festivals, artifacts and cultural relics of Jieyun Temple by this essay, and wish to profit the local religion and cultural historic study.
