The project "Illusory Eight Immortals" is based on the Chinese folk legend of the Eight Immortals, aiming to reinterpret their imagery through a contemporary lens. This work offers a visual interpretation of the individual’s spiritual world, encouraging viewers to rediscover the cultural essence of the Eight Immortals and fostering a dialogue between traditional belief and modern design.The design concept integrates eight forms of internal transformation experienced throughout the artist’s life journey: doubt—clarity, confusion—wisdom, hesitation—original intention, constraint—ease, complexity—simplicity, deficiency—integrity, apathy—passion, melancholy—contentment. Each transformation corresponds to the character and symbolic weapon of one Immortal, forming eight sets of binary themes that serve as the conceptual basis for the poster designs.Each Immortal is mapped to a psychological state from the creator’s own growth. Using modern visual language, the project explores how to reshape divine imagery into contemporary symbolic expressions. These works reflect the inner states and transformations experienced during life’s journey of challenges and ideal pursuits. The unique personality and artifact of each Immortal symbolize different stages and spiritual conditions in life, making the entire creative process a visual reinterpretation blending cultural meaning with personal cultivation.The posters employ folk motifs and cultural symbols, enhanced by techniques such as visual distortion, spatial illusion, color transitions, and light-shadow composition, creating a dreamlike fusion of fantasy and reality. Each piece showcases a distinct visual language and stylistic expression, embodying the spirit of “Each Immortal crossing the sea in their own way,” and reflecting both the inner exploration and stylistic experimentation of different creative stages.
