Traditional painting artist Chen Qiu-shan, is born in Pingtung. His works are widely distributed in Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung. In his early years, he studied traditional painting under a famous Tainan artist Pan Chun-yuan and Jiayi artist Lin Yu-shan. Known for his proficiency in integrating calligraphy and poetry into traditional painting, Chen Qiu-shan has earned the title of the "Triple Excellence in Poetry, Calligraphy, and Painting." Temple murals typically depict stories related to loyalty and filial piety, but Chen Qiu-shan distinguishes himself by eliminating exaggerated and supernatural elements. He even incorporates contemporary events into temple murals, creating a distinctive style. Unlike traditional apprenticeship, Chen Qiu-shan did not follow a specific artistic school but received guidance at Lin Yu-shan's home. Under his mentor's influence, he skillfully integrated Western oil painting techniques into the traditional painting, resulting in a more three-dimensional and realistic artistic expression. While Chen Qiu-shan is not only skilled in traditional painting, but his artistic repertoire extends beyond it to include reliefs, woodcarvings, and clay sculptures. Notable works such as the statues in the Grand Buddha Hall of Kaohsiung Foguangshan and the Pure Water Cave are both crafted by Chen Qiu-shan. Due to the difficulty in estimating the total number of his works, this research will focus on Chen Qiu-shan's traditional painting works at Dajia Ciji Temple in Tainan. Dajia Ciji Temple, located in Rende Township, Tainan County, enshrines the deity Baosheng Dadi. Chen Qiu-shan and his wife, Li Wen-yin, had stayed for 13 years to paint in Ciji Temple. The temple allowed the artist the freedom to choose creative themes, resulting in the preservation of many non-traditional style works. Whether expressing his views on current events or reflecting on life, Chen Qiu-shan's paintings, along with the accompanying poetry, are not only visually appealing but also intellectually stimulating. This research will compile and analyze Chen Qiu-shan's works at Dajia Ciji Temple, examining the evolution of his artistic style and the stories and content behind his works.
