As the Taiwanese educational system still puts more emphasis on passing on knowledge than cultivating humanities, and school curriculum is designed to be exam-oriented, subjects not on exams are considered secondary and students, who are under intense academic pressure, are often suppressed and restricted by standardized thinking. As an art teacher, I think hard about how to lead students to break through habitual left brain thinking, push past boundaries by exercising right brain imagination and creative thinking, and express their feelings and inner thoughts through artistic creations.
This research is based on the idea of imagination to explore the functions of neurons, understand how the left and right brains work, and to know the effects of the right brain on intuitive thinking and imagination. Artistic creation not only serves as an outlet for feelings but also helps to heal emotions.
Imagination greatly contributes to the artistic creation process. Among all schools in modern art history, Surrealism, which is the most imagination-dependent, provides art education an appropriate theoretic basis for imagination and creative expression. People tend to limit themselves by failing to think outside the box and thus miss a lot of fun and surprises brought about through imagination. Art can be found everywhere if we keep a perceptive eye open and let our imaginations run free. Any medium or material is nothing more than an exterior form and cannot be graded and essence of an artwork is the creative thinking inside it, which has a lot to do with imagination.
