Nantou County is the only county in Taiwan which is not close to the sea. The mountain area is as high as 85% therefore it was called “Shanyue Xian” (mountainous county it means) by the middle of the Qing Dynasty. In the book “Zuoluo County Records” written by Zhou Zhongxuan records that aboriginal tribes occupied almost the land within the Nantou county, as a result the county was called "Fan Di" and "Fan Jie" these all lead to a speciality of geography and culture. The reclamation of Nantou county was completed until the period of Qing Tongzhi Emperor. The monuments, ancient documents, and plaques left by trailblazer became the beginning of studying the development of calligraphy in Nantou. In 1950, Nantou was officially set up as a county, and calligraphy development started to be recorded. In 1962, Mr. Chen Qichen organized the "Provincial Calligraphy Research Association of the Provincial Government", and the trend of learning calligraphy began. In 1976, Mr. Li Hubmo established the "Nantou County Fine Arts Society" created an atmosphere of promoting the exchange and improvement of art and calligraphy. In 1988, the "Nantou County Calligraphy Society" was established, and a series of calligraphy-related activities were valued and promoted, and they are growing vigorously. By the year 2000, the total number of winners of the province's art exhibition ranked fourth in the country, and its achievements were a sudden emergence. This study takes the development of calligraphy in Nantou County as the main axis. This study explores the process of the development of calligraphy in Nantou County in the past 50 years, the period from the official establishment of Nantou in 1950 to the 921 earthquake in 2000. The study of the process started by investigating the source of development from those calligrahpy works by literati but also the local monuments and ancient plaques. Followed by the discussion of the development and influence for calligraphy education leaded by official policy and non-official associations. Furthermore, the analysis of the performance in calligraphy competitions and the change of writing style for local calligraphers. In conclusion, clearly distinguish each period of stagnation, recovery, revitalization and vigorous and the main factors of the development of calligraphy in Nantou County, This thesis can record and preserve the development process of Nantou calligraphy and the artistic achievements of calligraphers, provide reference for the development of calligraphy in Nantou County, and give a succinct vision for Nantou calligraphy.
