本論文主旨在探討法國處理阿爾及利亞獨立問題的始末，故本文在行文之初，首先對法國統治阿爾及利亞之歷史作一番概略之瞭解，俾能瞭解為何阿爾及利亞人亟欲擺脫法國的統治；法國於1830年入侵阿爾及利亞，直至1962年阿爾及利亞獨立，在這長達132年的法國統治時期，因為法國採行所謂的「同化」的殖民政策，鼓勵歐洲人移民到這塊領土，希望能使阿爾及利亞人融入到法國的體制內，但是在這項政策之下，阿爾及利亞人卻在政治、經濟、社會各方面皆遭受到不平等的對待；二次大戰後，受到世界各地的民族解放的浪潮的影響，阿爾及利亞人於1954年展開追求獨立的戰爭。
其次，探討當阿爾及利亞獨立戰爭爆發後，法國第四共和無視於整個世界潮流的趨勢，仍然希望以武力鎮壓的方式阻止法蘭西帝國分崩離析的窘境，雖然對於中南半島、摩洛哥、突尼西亞的獨立運動讓步，但是對於阿爾及利亞的獨立運動，第四共和依舊是無法跳脫出殖民主義的舊思維，並且因為第四共和政治體制的關係，使的法國政府無法產生一貫、有效的政策，進而使第四共和因為阿爾及利亞戰爭而結束她的壽命。
接著，當戴高樂重返法國政壇後，他知道阿爾及利亞這個燙手山芋對法國已經失去過往的益處；對法國而言，阿爾及利亞只是個沈重的負擔，法國必須放棄這個負擔；但是戴高樂的難題在於他處理阿爾及利亞問題時，要避免重蹈第四共和相同的下場。
再者，這場戰爭的發生期間是在冷戰對立的高峰時期，阿爾及利亞獨立戰爭，迫使美蘇兩強必須在北非地區追求獨立的民族與法國，此兩者之中做出選擇，使美國與蘇聯陷入相同的難題；一方面不想得罪法國，另一方面又想討好殖民地人民。
最後，在結論中，將對本論文各個章節內容提出個人的見解

The purpose of writing this thesis is to discuss the history of France how to deal with the Algeria independence’s problem. From the beginning, in the dissertation, France invaded Algeria in 1830 and in 1962 Algeria got independence; during this period of French regency, France adopt the policy of “assimilation”, encourage people from Europe to this territory, hoped Algeria could be integrated in France by this policy，but under the policy，the Algerian are treated as a second people in all level. After WWⅡ, Algerian were inspired by the trend of decolonization everywhere, the war to independence broke out in 1954.
The second part in the thesis. When the Algerian war broke out, French Ⅳ republic ignored the fact of colonized people desiring to independence; Her reacts were to use the military forces , wished to repressed this flame. Although the French Ⅳ republic conceded the independence of Vietnam、Morocco and Tunisia, she still wouldn’t give the independence to Algerian. Further, since the problem of Fourth Republic’s constitution, she can’t adopt coherent and effective policies, the Fourth Republic ended her life by the Algerian war.
The third part in the thesis. De Gaulle ‘s return to French politic in the wake of the end of Fourth Republic. De Gaulle knew Algeria was not benefit to France any longer. For France, Algeria was a heavy burden. De Gaulle must be careful during the process of his giving the independence to Algeria.
The fourth part in the thesis. Discussing the dilemma to both of US and USSR, they bogged down in the Algerian crisis which followed that of Indo-china, France seemed to international opinion to be guilty of an out-of-date colonialism. US and USSR wished they can get the support from France and friendships from Algerian in the same time.
