近代的長笛音樂起源於法國。法國長笛作品，以優美的旋律與炫麗的技巧為其特色。法國長笛學派(The French Flute School)在十九世紀末、二十世紀初時相當興盛，它將法國長笛音樂的風潮廣為傳播，成為近代最重要的長笛流派。
法國長笛學派由十九世紀末法國巴黎高等音樂院的長笛教授塔法奈爾(Paul Taffanel, 1844-1908)所創立，並藉由他的學生與巴黎音樂院的考試制度而蓬勃發展。
本文著重於法國長笛學派對近代法國長笛音樂發展的影響；另外，在法國巴黎高等音樂院考試制度及長笛考試曲目上有介紹及分析。
