The goal of conservation is to pursue the sustainability of resources to support human welfare. For renewable bio-resources, conservation is the balance of protection and utilization. Overexploitation by human is one of the main driving forces for biodiversity crisis. Researches on intention of positive or negative behavior toward wildlife help to identify the influential factors of the behavior, which facilitates better conservation strategies planning. In Taiwan, ring-necked pheasant(Phasianus colchicus formosanus) is a protected species listed under the Wildlife Protection Act. However, pheasant trapping and hunting are quite common in farmlands especially where pheasants damage the crops. Hunting intention is a key concern in conservation of the ring-necked pheasant. This study follows the theory of planned behavior to examine the relative importance of attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavior control in determining the intention of pheasant hunting amongst farmers in Fonglin Town in eastern Taiwan. A total of 203 valid questionnaires were collected. The predictors of attitudes, subjective norms, and perceptions of behavioral control were correlated highly with the theoretically derived sets of underlying beliefs, respectively, while the hierarchical multiple regression analysis hunting intention was strongly influenced by the three predictors. The experiences of the past hunting and crop damage by pheasants correlated weakly with hunting intention and their effects were largely mediated by the components of the theory of planned behavior. Compared with the farmers with lower hunting intention, those with higher intention thought their crops were damaged more frequently, and they agreed more that hunting could reduce the damage. It suggests that the crop damage be the main factor responsible for farmers’ intension of pheasant hunting. In the future, efforts should be made to identify and solve the conflict between farmers and ring-necked pheasants in order to promote the support of conservation policies by farmers.
