姜．卡羅．梅諾悌（Gian-Carlo Menotti, 1911-2007）為義大利裔的美國二十世紀具有代表性的作曲家，他同時為歌劇劇本作家。梅諾悌於七歲時便可創作藝術歌曲，十一歲時擔任作品的編劇工作，展現出作曲和編劇的天賦。
梅諾悌一生中創作了二十七部膾炙人口的歌劇作品。歌劇中的音樂和劇本都是由自己親自創作，其巧妙的搭配，這也使得梅諾悌在歌劇史上有舉足輕重的地位。也因此梅諾悌於美國二十世紀音樂的蓬勃發展之際，推介音樂藝術以全方位的方式，將美國現代歌劇推向至最高峰。
另一方面，梅諾悌除了歌劇作品外，尚有藝術歌曲的創作，也為創作史上留下不可抹滅的建樹。從梅諾悌的作品中，常可看見許多新的創作方式和思維，但又保留了義大利式的風格，使得作品內有互相補足的部分，可說是獨樹一格的作品。
本論文共包含六個章節，第一章為緒論，主要闡述研究動機與目的和研究範圍與方法；第二章為研究十九世紀末至二十世紀新世界美國音樂的崛起；第三章研究梅諾悌之生平及其創作風格；第四章以梅諾悌《靈媒》（The Medium）之兩首詠唱調，分別為〈黑天鵝〉（The Black Swan）與〈莫妮卡華爾滋〉（Monica's Waltz）為主體，進行樂曲分析與研究；第五章以梅諾悌藝術歌曲獻給女高音伊利莎白．舒娃茲柯芙（Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, 1911-2007）之藝術歌曲集《遠方的歌曲》（Canti della lontananza）中的三首歌曲，分別為〈無緣的愛人〉（Gli Amanti Impossibile）、〈下雪的早晨〉（Mattinata di Neve）與〈第七杯酒〉（Il Settimo Bicchiere di Vino）為主體，進行樂曲分析與研究；第六章為結論。本文的研討，是希冀在演唱時更能貼近作曲創作此曲的原始構想與樂曲的確切風格。

Gian-Carlo Menotti（1911-2007）an Italian-American, was one of the America’s most distinguished contemporary opera composers as well as a playwright. Menotti’s gift in composition was unfolded very early as he began to compose art songs at the age of seven, and wrote the words and music of his first opera four years later at eleven.
Menotti composed a total of twenty-seven highly praised operas in his lifetime. He wrote all the music and the scripts by himself, which makes him stand high in the history of the Opera. Living in the blooming era of American 20th century music, Menotti used a comprehensive way to express art of music and pushed it to another peak.
On the other hand, Menotti had written not only operas but also art songs. Though those art songs may not be as popular as his operas, they still had great position in composition history. From his works, we can find not only plenty of creative ways and thoughts, but also the preservation of Italian traditional style. Such complement in his work becomes an very unique style.
There are six chapters in this study. The first chapter is the introduction, which presents the motive and goal of this study and its research scope and approach. The second chapter discusses the new era American music in the end of nineteenth to twentieth century. The third chapter focuses on the life and musical style of Menotti. The fourth chapter includes analysis and interpretation from two arias of the Medium, which are The Black Swan and Monica's Waltz. The fifth chapter includes analysis and interpretation of three songs from Canti della lontananza , which are Gli Amanti Impossibile, Mattinata di Neve and Il Settimo Bicchiere di Vino. The sixth chapter is the conclusion of this study, which would assist the performers to immerse themselves in the original motivation and the composition style of Menotti.
