There has been increasing awareness and emphasis on the importance of sustaining personal health, raising the demand for innovative, more convenient ways for individuals to monitor and manage their health pervasively. The advancements and proliferation of smart mobile devices equipped with camera and sensors have made readily available many types of mobile apps which enable ubiquitous acquisition of vital signs. With the prevalence and massive availability of health related mobile apps, people have been widely using apps running on smart phones or tablets for collecting such vital signs as heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, electrocardiogram (ECG), etc. An approximate assessment of health level can then be achieved based on the variation trend of collected data.
The quality of health level assessment relies on the accuracy of vital signs acquired. Inaccurate physiological data could deduce misleading conclusion on health level and derive severe consequences. In this thesis, we confront this issue by looking into the accuracy of the heart rate acquired from top-ranked smart phone based apps with respect to different exercise intensity. This research intends to provide some insightful information about health monitoring apps by using heart rate apps as an example. The information can be used as a reference for people who are interested in adopting mobile apps as their health monitoring tools.
