十八世紀末的歐洲興起了浪漫主義，主要重視個人思想、追求自由並熱烈探索未知的事物，在音樂上，作曲家們致力於表達個人內心情感與奧秘，興起了所謂的標題音樂，而各式各樣的「性格曲」( Characteristic Piece ) 也成為此時期作曲家們最具表現力、最能傳達內心感受的形式之一。德國作曲家舒曼 ( Robert Schumann, 1810-1856 ) 為浪漫樂主義風格的代表人物，在十九世紀佔有舉足輕重的地位。
本文所探討的《幻想曲集》作品12 ( Phantasiestücke ) 結合了眾多浪漫元素，並透過音樂與文學的結合，突顯出舒曼個人獨特的音樂理。整體而言，此曲不論是在旋律、和聲、節奏、調性與氣氛的營造等表現上，都可以清楚見到舒曼慣用的創作手法，而本身敏感多變的個性也是影響他音樂創作風格的主要因素。
本文除了序言與結語，共分為四個章節。第一章主要介紹舒曼生平與他的音樂創作；第二章敘述其鋼琴作品主要的創作方式與文學之關聯，並介紹幻想曲的起源及《幻想曲集》的創作背景；第三章為本文重心，將各首樂曲的結構分析做深入探討，並研究其特殊的創作手法；第四章為此曲的個人演奏詮釋與心得。
