By examining human nature’s intrinsic drive to express our experiences, emotions, and thoughts, this thesis explores the profound relationship between emotional and physical expression, particularly through the lens of dance and performance. While these expressions are inherently part of our nature, conscious effort – such as training and introspection – allows individuals to transcend instinctual limitations, fostering a deeper understanding of oneself, and the world around them. Dance, in its capacity to push physical boundaries and confront vulnerabilities, becomes a powerful tool for emotional and personal growth. The qualities of the performer truly emerge when these are combined with the act of being present.
Viewing dance and performance in connection to anthropology and endocrinology, this thesis explores how deeply intertwined our inner (emotional) and outer (physical) expressions are, and how they create not only an authentic impression, but also a shared experience with the audience. The performer’s integration of inner and outer expression underscores their deeply interconnected nature, making them central to an impactful performance. Ultimately, this research suggests that being in the moment, and achieving balance between reflection and action, stability, and risk, can unlock a dancer’s potential of transformative performance, and discover deeper fulfillment and mastery in life.
The research on expression, anthropology, and endocrinology is shown through the dance performance They Wanted It to Last Forever, which is elaborated in this thesis.
Please note that this thesis was written in English and Traditional Chinese.
