In the Edo period, There were some different education units from the traditional education units. Teaching civilians as the students, Terakoya education was especially at higher attention. Terakoya was managed by civilians, monks and businessmen for teaching people daily life and moral education. In the 19th century, Terakoya became more and more popular. In the end of the Edo period, there were many Terakoyas of more than fifteen thousand. According to the data, the average education enrollment rates of Japanese children was 90% or higher. In the middle of 19th century, the men’s literacy rates of civilians was 54% and the women’s literacy rates of civilians was 20%. By the data, we can understand how general of education it was in the Edo period. At the same time, there was some education like Terakoya in Taiwan, it was called Syoin. Both Terakoya and Syoin were successful education systems. It is useful for us to study. The systems, the teaching methods, the teaching information and the effect upon the future of their kids were the research information for us. We will compare Terakoya with Syoin as the best model to understand the effect and process of the education.
