‘Ode to The Sky’ is the Sixth movement of the giant Chinese orchestral suite “ Morning Star Lilies Forever”, Wang Dan-Hong’s first concerto for wind instrument, which is full of colorful local musical language and is able to flourish features of suonas in different keys. The author has learned this work at the opening concert of the 2018 Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival, which motivated this study. The study built a basic knowledge of this work through literature review and composer interview, leaning Wang Dan-Hong has applied musical materials and features of Shanbei style while composing; secondly, it discussed this piece from four aspects of musical structure, orchestration, melodic materials and performing technique; lastly, grounded on the above analysis, it concluded a personal perspective concerning interpretation. Through the mentioned research steps and personal performing experience, the study has indicated a best performing instruction towards the work and highlighted several requirements for basic skills and performing techniques; it’s expected to provide other performers with advice concerning ‘Ode to The Sky.’ Through the detailed analyses and discussions on Wang Dan-Hong’s composing methods and concept, it’s also expected to motivate more ideas and resonance to interpret ‘Ode to The Sky’ much impressively.
