梅諾悌(Gian Carlo Menotti, 1911-2007)義大利裔美國作曲家，是二十世紀美國最具影響力的歌劇作家之一。本研究報告根據獨幕歌劇《老處女與賊》(The Old Maid and the Thief, 1939)中陶德小姐(Miss Todd)角色進行研究，透過歌劇其中四個場景，第十景〈看看你的左邊，看看你的右邊。〉、第十一景〈陶德女士！平克頓女士，你不坐嗎？〉、第十二景〈敲門。沒回應。〉以及第十四景〈樂蒂夏！你在哪裡？〉，從歌詞翻譯、樂曲分析及詮釋研究並以音樂和戲劇之間的關係來作為研究的核心。

The Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menotti (1911-2007) is considered as one of the most influential American opera composers in the twentieth century. In contemplating the dramatic tension, musical-structural design and textual interpretation styles of the scene No.10 “Look to your left. Look to your right.”, No.11 “Miss Todd! Miss Pinkerton, won’t you sit down?”, No.12“Knock at the door. No answer.” and No.14“Laetitia! Where are you ?” of the Menotti’s one-act opera The Old Maid and the Thief, this paper aims at providing a thorough study on the female protagonist of this work – Miss Todd. Certain aspects including Menotti’s musical portrayal of Miss Todd and the music-drama relationship in The Old Maid are central to this study.
